2005 SF Tri Club Bike Program

The SF Tri Club offers weekly bike rides, spin class, skills clinics, and maintenance clinics. If you dont find what youre looking for on our website or have any suggestions, email the SF Tri Club Bike Coordinator at bike.coordinator@sftriclub.org. Here's what the bike program has to offer:

Weekend Club Ride Overview

Overview
We usually have at least one club ride each weekend accommodating all skill levels. Rides are led by members and usually leave from the Sports Basement parking lot in the Presidio on Saturday mornings. Most rides are 35-40 miles, but we often have a 60 or 80 mile option. Joining a weekend ride is one of the best ways to meet other club members and find training partners. Rides are posted on our website. All riders are required to wear helmets - no exceptions!

Newbie Rides
We plan to host a newbie ride every other weekend in February and March, and monthly thereafter. All newbie rides are no-drop rides, which means that no one gets left behind. The distance is typically 20 miles and the pace is slow. The goal of newbie rides is to: 1) teach basic road bike safety; 2) allow new triathletes to build up strength and endurance so they can participate in our regular weekly club rides; and 3) help new triathletes get comfortable riding in a group/paceline.

FAQ

  • What's a No-Drop ride?
A no-drop ride means that no one gets left behind. On a typical no-drop ride we will have 3-4 meeting points to allow everyone to regroup. If you're not familiar with the route or you think you might fall behind, be sure to check in with the ride leader before the ride begins. Most of the weekend rides are no-drop rides.

  • What/s the ten minute rule?
All rides leave 10 minutes after the stated start time on the website. Dont be late or the ride will leave without you.

  • How do I RSVP for a ride?
Please RSVP on the website if youre planning on attending a ride. Just log in, click on the event, and click RSVP. Please RSVP for all club events.

  • What happens if it rains?
Rain cancels (unless stated otherwise on the website). Always check the website for any last minute updates.

  • Do I need a road bike?
We strongly suggest using a road bike on SF Tri club rides. Once the season gets under way, the pace of the rides will pick up and it will be extremely difficult to keep up with the group if you dont have a road bike. Unfortunately, we dont have enough mountain bikers in the club to hold mountain bike rides.

  • How do I find a carpool for rides that start outside of San Francisco?
Just log in, click on the event, and click on email all participants at the bottom of the page.

  • What should I bring on a ride?
Required: Bike (naturally), helmet, loads of Pure Energy

Recommended: Food (bananas, bars, gels, water, etc), tube(s), air pump (or CO2), identification, money, cell phone (if you have one), extra tire, allen wrench/bike tool, light (if biking in or near dark)

Biking Skills Clinics

We are fortunate to have recruited Scott Saifer from Wenzel Coaching to lead a series of bike clinics for our club this season. They will take place at our favorite place, the Presidio Sports Basement. Check back here soon for the dates and times of these popular clinics!

All About Scott Saifer

Scott Saifer has been coaching endurance athletes for 10 years. He has been instrumental in the coaching of athletes to numerous race victories, including District, National and World Championship medals. He has guided athletes from the beginner ranks to professional and world amateur status and enjoys working with all levels in between.

Scott has raced road, mountain and track bicycles for ten years, accumulating more than a dozen victories. He is a graduate in biophysics from UC Berkeley and has completed the coursework for the Master's Degree in exercise physiology and sports psychology. He is well informed in the latest scientific training techniques and sports nutrition and how they apply to endurance athletes. Scott uses his racing and coaching experiences, as well as analysis of each individual athlete, to develop programs that will lead to improved performance.

Through his work with a health related charity, Scott has also helped several hundred beginning cyclists prepare for their first century rides and endurance MTB events. He has trained and managed six teams for the 24 Hours of Moab MTB relay race, helped more than 50 riders complete all five passes at the Markleeville Death Ride, and trained 30 skiers to compete in the California Gold Rush cross country ski races.

For the last 13 years Scott has organized sills clinics for recreational and competitive cyclists. His most popular clinics cover such skills as no-hands riding, pacelines, echelons, climbing, descending, sprinting and "sumo cycling", among other topics.

Bike Maintenance Clinics

For those of us who aren't already mechanically inclined, or who have never changed a flat, we will hold a series of clinics geared towards keeping your bike in check. The Tire Change Clinics are a must for newbies. The Comprehensive Maintenance Clinics will keep you out of the bike shop and out on your bike instead. Details such as time and location will follow as soon as clinics are scheduled.

Bike Uniforms

The club offers an array of clothing and gear complete with the SF Tri Club Pure Energy logo. Items should be arriving in February. Check here to see what's available when they arrive. In the meantime, you can email uniforms@sftriclub.org for more information.
